I still have some issues with my left leg becoming stiff during the day - although admittedly have still eaten a small piece of wheat flour in the form of a tea cake today. I think I have got to the point of confronting my demons where a brown rice diet is concerned - so maybe tomorrow will begin my renewal process. I live in Exeter, Devon and apart from supermarket gluten free stuff, which aside from being fairly expensive, tastes pretty dreadful, is all that is available for either a treat or a staple. The city centre itself only has a few odd biscuits, and very expensive bread.
I discovered recently that the expense part seems to revolve around NHS prescriptions. I am suddenly beginning to feel here that while some foods are definitely of some benefit to our health, our leaders are intending to add such foods to an NHS list to raise some more cash. Can't raise taxes on food so.
There does seem to be a lot of people that appear to be suffering from all the classic symptoms of gluten problems, and now I believe that because most are finding themselves on a fast food diet of convenience foods, such as pasties, pies, sandwiches, cakes - this contributes to most of the problems associated with the reduced absorption of nutrients from most of the foods that we eat.
This is the first time that a rice diet has become necessary to improve my health and all attempts have failed over the past couple of years. Largely because of the fear factor. What fears can there be with detoxing on a brown rice fast ?
I was introduced to the wonders of macrobiotics in January 1979. Immediately after Christmas. Straight from eating meat, all the usual stodgy foods. I didn't particularly feel unhealthy, just tired for much of the time. Overweight ? I suppose so. But didn't get fixated by scales. Living on the North Devon coast, with a fantastic view of miles of fantastic beach, with no traffic in the depths of winter seemed like a good time to have a go at renewing myself. I had already confronted some emotional stuff through transcendental meditation, and found myself with a copy of George Ohsawa's book on macrobiotics. I don't think becoming engrossed in his work became an issue, there were bits I probably read. My rice fast lasted until about June 1979. There were some fantastic experiences that I can recall, such as sitting on the balcony looking out into the sky in May, there were hardly any clouds over the beach, and just a few people on deck chairs, which they'd brought themselves on holiday, I'd often heard of some weird yoga trick that was played, stare at a cloud in the sky, and watch it dissolve in front of your eyes. I tried this. I don't know how or why it looks as though it works, especially only with very high clouds which might dissolve anyway - but that particularly was not the strange bit - after a few minutes of staring without blinking, a black disc appears in front of me, some damage I have done maybe, my vision has changed, so turned around to face inside the bedroom. There was no black blob in the room, when I turned round, it was still outside. This black blob turned out to be a swarm of flies that had clustered right into the path where I had stared. I can offer no conclusions why this should happen.
However surely the amount of physical energy and strength was probably the pinnacle of a brown rice diet - or at least until I became irritable for no real real reason. My nervous system had suddenly developed a problem, and decided that maybe a change of scenery was the answer. I found a job in Barnstaple, Devon - but discovered after about less than a month that this was probably not the answer either, although eating plenty of rice, did find myself eating other stuff, which didn't especially note. Barnstaple had a health food cafe, health food shop, but didn't appear to have knowledge or experience or anything that would help uncover this problem with my nervous system. I travelled to London and spent some time visiting Earth Exchange, the community health foundation in Old Street, then ultimately, we are solo again. This was about the time I think I discovered about the human condition having lost its ability to be instinctive. At some stage, like all other animals, wildlife, anything undomesticated, we must have had the instinctive ability to know what is basically missing from our diet and what we should need to live on. Now we don't seem to know how to boil an egg!!! We need a cookbook for simple things.
Macrobiotics is different really. It does need some help to get started with this as a lifestyle change, and there are some decent books that can be viewed over the internet using Googles bookshop - just type in macrobiotics - or gluten free - in fact anything you please - and the wonders of technology will instantly display a list that lasts forever on these subjects. Remember these are actual books that you can buy in bookshops and not the sometimes virtual grafitti that can be found on the web. In most cases though you will need to order these, if you want a an actual copy, unless you live somewhere in a major city area - London used to have a fantastic range. You might also be lucky with a library, except maybe in the Devon area, since these appear to be streamlining, rationing books, closing libraries
My left leg has definately improved this week, the burning sensation inside the thigh has all but disappeared, and with a couple of stretches with a yoga position, have even found that my one slice of toast also does not seem to be a problem.
The knee joints are also very flexible compared with a couple of months ago. With all this personal information the impression one gets is that most of our illnesses are centred around our intestines and the inability to absorb these nutrients. Having been on Peter Thompsons web site I have noticed that there seem to be many people with all the same symptoms and not just in the UK. There do appear to be more who have taken control of things by themselves without recourse to a visit to the doctors. Personally, a visit to the doctor is probably essential.
I wrote quite a lot here on thursday 28th July, and the computer at the library managed to lose the lot, much has been forgotten. So we have yet another go.
It is now Friday 5th August 2011. Yesterday, thursday had some very serious painful episodes which I am hoping just revolves around my eating some free from biscuits. The amount of sugar in these is obviously an issue here. If it is for me, then it must be for most others that suffer and are not sure what this might be. The simple sugars go straight through into the blood the same way as some have experienced a problem with even free from gluten flours, the particles are very small and enter the blood causing a problem around the left thigh.
Some time has passed since I began this, and to be honest have not been particularly strict with this diet - a very large bruise coloured rash has appeared on my left leg during late September. It lasted a while, but when compared with those that have shown me some of there problems - such as puffy legs - mine looks insignificant. Looked at a site yesterday - October 10th - Leaky Gut - yet another instant cure for all ills. Or is she real. She wrote an email which appears to have generated a virus - sending some php file - definately not to be opened. Only way I knew what this was - it sent an email to this blog page.
Far too much bread in my diet yesterday - Tuesday 11th - left leg very irritable again. Now I can't seem to ftp my zzl site - the hostzi and cc sites have both disappeared. ZZL still shows up but that is all. Was okay yesterday. I will add my Menu to other stuff here
I wish that I could write some of the spontaneous stuff when wondering around. Some of the stuff we think when moving around, sometimes in conversation with others, does seem to be quite liberating.
Yesterday - October 17th was yet another irritatingly painful day. My left leg was really sore from when I woke to when eating brown rice, peas, seaweed, leek. From then on it was comfortable to October 18th - so far. I have the feeling that maybe gluten free flour products may be less of a benefit than a cure, but more a treat when a treat needed as a reward perhaps. But in very small quantities. Another reason of course is, eating too close to sleeping. I did have some brown rice and beans late last night, which didn't appear too disturbing. I would suggest that the grains of flour, because they are basically not chewable in the classic sense, will probably go straight through the intestines and directly into the blood and treated as alien causing a problem. Something new that I have noticed recently, is what appears to be some form of gash line on the forehead. In an area that suggests that the liver might be faulty now. Must keep an eye on that.
20th October 2011 - Thursday - managed almost two days now with a very comfortable left leg. In fact today, there is almost no problem. I suspect the problem does revolve around anti inflammatory painkillers. It is only a short while since stopping those. These are a popular chemist item, so I wonder how many people that have the same problem take this medication.
21st October - Friday - Almost a pain free day yesterday - until about 8.30pm when a sharp pain in the top of left leg started again. Did eat rather a lot last night before bed, and rather late so not happy about that, and that did affect me early morning. I also did eat a sandwich, rather a lot of other bread during the day, so that did not help either really.Quite a bit of rice, plus peas, leak seaweed. Egg sandwich may have also made me feel tired. Better Nutrition
1st November - Tuesday - wehave experienced an almost pain free time since the 21st October, except for the odd twinge in the left leg. My health challenge is here again. Work this time. Will I have a job soon or not? Most things now no longer really bother me simply because of the improvement physically.

How exercise effects our gut health - I am not sure I agree with everything this woman writes - she suggests that eating meat is a must - which it isn't. Except for expediency - where the amino acids are concerned.. And that we should exercise - except that, if the body's internals have been damaged and the bruising is not healing properly, the system is using up glut-amine to do some repair to our anatomy. Glut-amine is not considered an essential amino acid as we manufacture it ourselves. But under certain conditions, we obviously don't make enough. It is essential to exercise of course, but this stuff should be low intensity stuff. Weights work should be out of the question, as should some forms of stomach crunches unless they are low intensity and just to stimulate blood flow. If the exercise creates lactation this won't be beneficial especially if glut-amine is rather low or needed for repairs. If an exercise creates pain which is to be managed by some form of anti inflammatory tablet, any work done will not show benefits.
Good exercise versus bad exercise - weird. This particular piece turned up in my email the day after the one above. Spooky thoughts when someone else writes something similar.

I don't know about you but many of tips that I have been sharing
with you lately were once pretty controversial to me. They went
against many of the beliefs that I held for so many years and I
questioned so much of it every step of the way.
against many of the beliefs that I held for so many years and I
questioned so much of it every step of the way.
Just think about... I spent more than 4 years studying food science
and human nutrition in preparation to become a dietitian. And when
was the last time you heard a dietitian tell you that it was OK to
eat fat, let alone tell you that you actually need to eat fat in
order to improve your health?
Sure, now in my career as a Holistic Nutritionist and Functional
Medicine Practitioner this all makes perfect sense to me but only
because these are some of the very same tips that have helped me
cure my Leaky Gut and turn my health around 180 degrees. I
literally ended 7 years of health problems in a few weeks.
But I'm not only speaking from personal experience. I'm speaking
from the personal experience of hundreds of personal clients and
others who are already reaping the rewards of the Leaky Gut Cure
program.
But don't take my word for it. I want to share with you some of the
more recent feedback that I have received on my Leaky Gut Cure
program...
Juliette from Australia emailed me to say:
"I most certainly have started on your diet and I have improved
80%. I feel great and hope to feel even better with time after 40
plus years of suffering. I thank you with all my heart, may God
bless you and your family for everything,
Juliette"
Cara from Asheville, NC was getting such great results
that she wrote me this testimonial:
"Karen Brimeyer 's Leaky Gut Cure saved my life.
I had suffered for years and seen a dozen specialists for treatment
of chronic conditions. They had no solutions to offer. With bills
and prescriptions piling up, facing disability, I turned to the
internet one more time. "What do I want?" I thought to myself... I
googled 'leaky gut cure'. That's when I found Karen's program.
I was nervous and afraid to try it, but I am so glad I did. The
program is very easy to stick to, with written guidelines to follow
every step of the way. I noticed great improvements after just the
first day. Now, having been following the diet for about 10 weeks,
I am almost well, with restored self-worth and a positive outlook.
I have never felt so good and been so capable I'm even starting to
enjoy my hobbies again. I have spent more than the cost of this
program on food that I threw up afterward... If only I could get
back some of the years I've wasted with practitioners that told me
Leaky Gut doesn't exist.
Thanks, Karen!"
Krystyna from Australia emailed me to say:
"Dear Karen,
Since I have started your diet my health has improved greatly, the
bloating of my stomach disappeared, I am losing weight and I have
much more energy than before. I have been diagnosed with
diverticulitis and hiatal hernia and have not received one useful
advise from specialists or my GP. In the past I spent a fortune on
naturopaths and supplements which didn't do me much good either.
Reading your book I discovered that it is a result of my leaky gut!
I wonder why over all this time nobody told me that!"
These are the emails that continue to give me the energy and
motivation to continue doing what I set out to do which was to
create awareness for Leaky Gut Syndrome and offer help to the
millions of suffers worldwide.
In fact, you can see even more Success Stories just like these that
I've received from other people in your same exact shoes:
But I want to wake up one morning and read your email about how
much better you feel now that you have started my program. That's
what will make me happy.
And trust me, the diet is only a part of the Leaky Gut Cure program
and these success stories haven't even completed the full program.
My Guarantee to You
Am I confident that I can help you? Yes, because this program has
already helped so many people, why would I expect you to be any
different? But I have much more confidence in my program than that.
I'm offering you the opportunity to try my Leaky Gut Cure program
without any risk.
I'm willing to put myself on the line to help you make sure that
you don't get caught up in any roadblocks that might slow your
progress. And if there is the slight chance that it doesn't work
for you then I don't want your money. I'll gladly give you a full
refund and even help point you in the right direction because I
still want to make sure that you get relief, no matter what.
You really do have nothing to lose but everything to gain.
So help me by becoming a living example of my work and help show
others that Leaky Gut Syndrome can be overcome and that we can all
accomplish a new level of health by clicking the link below and getting started with the Leaky Gut Cure program today:
8th November - Tuesday - went a bit overboard with bread any virtually anything edible. Did result in some pain in the left leg again. A fried egg this morning with beans on toast didn't seem to have the effect that makes for yawning on the bus a little later. Felt slightly tired, but not bad after binging. The binging is definitely under control so its not the uncontrollable effects of withdrawal symptoms. Not much brown rice today. My weight feels a bit heavy, stomach feels a bit bloated. The nuisance pain that has arrived in the spine seems to be going.
9th November - Wednesday - woke with a bit of a headache this morning. Did not eat too much before bed last night. Left leg pain has returned today. A fried egg with beans on toast had the yawning effect. The egg was well done - so it probably stems from whatever this is cooked in. I know there is some effect similar from butter or certain spreads. This activity must be further up the intestines, so my reintroducing cheddar cheese to my diet will wait for some time. Boiled egg does not produce the problem, nor does poached egg or scrambled egg.
10th November - Thursday - started writing this earlier at home and forgot to upload the thing before shutting down. Big improvement since yesterday. Left leg and both knees more comfortable. Gluten free products might be okay as a very occasional treat but not much good when seeking a cure. I feel a bit irritated at the moment writing this in the library. I should stop and do it again when returning home this evening perhaps.Which of course I didn't do.
Had a nasty twinge develop in the right hand later in the day. Bit like a trapped nerve. This might have appeared because of a toenail problem - weird or what ?
22nd November - Tuesday - left leg painful since last night. The experiment if you like that have been pursuing on myself suggests that having a standard rubbish diet and adding glut-amine just does not work. Have to return to brown rice and stuff for the duration of this problem. Maybe adding glut-amine as well.
22nd December - Thursday - left leg has been painful on and off now for about two weeks. It seems to have coincided with too much protein especially before going to bed, or resting in the afternoon. Karen Brimeyer talked about zen meditation in her latest email - whether I can get this or not I don't know. Not allowed to open the page at the library. Knees - both are a bit uncomfortable - acid level in both legs is a bit high. Have introduced some activia into diet which contains some lactose - this is probably not helping. Will try another source for bacteria. ZM from above link is a sale of cd's of how to's. Think I shall pass on this one.
23rd December - Friday - left leg still a little irritable but not as bad as of late. This book have found in my library - The rice diet cookbook looks good. This the start page of cookbook.
11th January 2012 - Tuesday - after a very uncomfortable start to this new year, this have taken a dramatic turn towards improvement. My left leg, up till this morning has almost completely recovered. Did have the remainder of a small amount of acidity collecting in the quadriceps area yesterday - but this now seems to have completely subsided. Emotionally my body is instructing me jog a bit - spontaneously - I should have resisted that this morning as it appears to have caused some discomfort in the left knee area. Either bone movement maybe caused by too much stretching or perhaps resting left leg over right - otherwise - it appears that things are progressing.
12th January 2012 - Thursday - really good feeling so far this week. Apart from the left knee issue which have covered with a tubigrip to give a little support, things have gone remarkably well. Which we will include all the rubbish eaten yesterday. Rather a lot of glutenous products. That also included my mistakenly buying a couple of southern fried chicken thighs, though actually threw most of them into a bin. Also ate rather too close to bedtime. Toilet visit was a bit dubious too. All in all, I would think things are definitely on the improving side. Jogging has created a niggly knee. I shall have to remember the food bit soon and what did I do to start this improvement.
13th January 2012 - Friday - still rather a lot of glutenous products again. But no real reaction. Marmalade on toast earlier today. The effects ought to be a lot of yawning while on the bus. Finally beginning to find out about the future of my job. Or no future in my job. Although they have offered me the prospects of applying for the position when they advertise it. How wonderful. I have had some inspiration in the past twelve months from some staff members who I thanked before Christmas. Especially for plodding this path towards finding answers.
16th January 2012 - Monday - in the last couple of days have eaten quite a lot of glutenous stuff. There appear to be no after effects. I think that removing protein rich foods before going to bed at night has enabled my body to convert the amino acids a bit more efficiently. Did take the odd glut-amine tablet during times when not planning eating that much. These are not particularly large dose affairs, and my protein food intake has not been like that during the period immediately before Christmas. The whites of my eyes sometimes seem to clearing up too.
17th January 2012 - Tuesday - still a lot of glutenous stuff again today. Will have to begin gluten free days again soon. Slightly acidic feel to the left leg during this morning. But not overly so.
18th January 2012 - Wednesday - I thought I was going to reduce the gluten today - but have not thus far. Left leg felt really inflamed last night but so far been good today.
19th January 2012 - Thursday - another day, but a little less gluten today though. As a result, less inflamed in left leg.
20th January 2012 - Friday - less brown rice today, but quite a lot of gluten again. Two sausage sandwiches achieved some very tired and yawny sessions on the bus this morning. A very long blog on leaky gut with some fairly recentish comments - The daily lipid
The protein zonulin seems worth looking at now
23rd January 2012 - Monday - no decrease in gluten products during the weekend, and even a chicken and mushroom slice last night - Sunday. Incredibly yawny Saturday after sausage on toast.
25th January 2012 - Wednesday - a sort of forum that has fairly recentish content How do you know you have a leaky gut from PaleoHacks.com. It does appear to relate to some historical diet from ancient times where we ate mostly meat based diets.
26th January 2012 - Thursday -a bit iffy in the left leg again. Latest offering from Karen Brimeyer on the subject of constipation - some illustrations worth noting.
27th January 2012 - Friday - a piece of rubbish that looks like it was written to generate feedback about food allergies and intolerance. Comes from Yahoo. Wheat intolerance from Yahoo. Foetus allergy.
